David BROOKS, The Social Animal, New York Times books (pocket edition)
By Juan Diego Ruiz, 1º Bachillerato EFL
This is a short novel which talks about love but it is also about mystery. The book is divided into two parts, one about Harold and the other about Erika. Both are young New Yorkers who are living parallel lives. However, they don't know and they've never seen or even heard about each other. Both are successful people who have prestigious degrees, fantastic jobs where they earn a huge salary, and the respect of their family and friends. They're even envied by a lot of people. They're not very beautiful people but everybody knows that they're destined to success. They never fall in love with anyone because they've never met anyone who understands their feelings and emotions. That's how two people living parallel lives in the same district of the same city die without any special person next to them.
I can't say that I liked this book, because I actually did not. However, it is interesting to see how the two main characters are looking for somebody with the other’s characteristics but never find each other.
