D.H. LAWRENCE et al., British and American Short Stories, Penguin Readers, B2, 2700 Headwords,
Álvaro Conesa Vidagany, 2º Bachillerato EFL

This book is an anthology of nine short stories written by British and American authors. I would like to recommend the second short story: ‘Mabel’, whose writer is W. Somerset Maugham.

‘Mabel’
George is a young handsome American man who was engaged to an English lady, Mabel, but they were separated for eight years as a result of several problems (wars, jobs, etc.)
One evening George received a letter from Mabel, which said that she was coming to the States to marry him. They hadn’t seen each other for a long time and George, being scared, decided to run away. However, Mabel, follows him everywhere he goes.        George flies to Asia to try and hide in Singapore, China, Bangkok, Hong Kong and finally in Tibet, where he has a friend who is a Consul. He thinks he is safe there, but one morning...

This book is ideal for people who don’t have time to read long novels, but enjoy reading interesting short stories, where each one treats a different topic and theme.

This book has been recommended before. See 3rd March 2011.
